So this place is definitely a hidden gem that is so convenient for people passing through the area. The place is just 3 minutes from I-81 so there really is no excuse to eat at a fast food joint next to the highway. The staff are super friendly, the food is delicious and home cooked, and the prices are unbelievably inexpensive. $1.25 for a grilled cheese?? You can't get a soda for that cheap! Everything was tasty and just what I was looking for in trying to find a place with local charm amongst a million McDs. The place definitely had a local flavor to it. Everyone seemed to know everyone and it was like stumbling into something from the past or at least stumbling into something different.

Stopped by for lunch on whim as we passed through town. Turns out it's one if the better 'dinner-type' restaurants we've been to! Husband had country fried steak w/cabbage and mash potatoes, and I had grilled chicken breast w/green beans and fried squash. Everything was excellent. Good/friendly service in a nice, small place.

Great country food with simple meats. They had a big selection of vegetables including squash and turnip greens. I went with green beans and fried okra to go with my hamburger steak with brown gravy. Oh and some cornbread came with it as well. The cornbread was a little dry for my liking but it came with butter that I didn't use. My wife got a grilled chicken sandwich with tater tots and was pleased even though the bun was a little big. The place was much to look at from the outside or inside but still good food for very cheap price! We were tempted to try the breakfast all day but the vegetable sides looked too good to pass up. The only downsides here was it was kind of chilly inside and it's a little small inside.

I pretty much agree with everyone else about the small town country feel of this place. My girlfriend and I ate here, like most people, during a road trip. The servers were prompt and efficient. The price of menu items was amazing (like eating at a diner in Mayberry in the 1960s). But, overall for us this place lacked the charm and warmth that others have written about. While waiting on our food I decided to do a little internet research on the town of Rural Retreat. This text is a direct quote from their official history on the Rural Retreat's website: "Although bountifully blest in natural resources, perhaps the greatest blessings of the area are the vigorous, loyal, hard-working people who inhabit the area. One does not have to be among these people long to realize that the Anglo Saxon ideals of virtue, honesty and democracy prevail. Amidst the dissatisfaction and discord prevailing throughout much of the world today, it is evident that the people of this area are striving for a better future for themselves and their families with faith in their God, their country, and themselves." The place felt weird because it was pretty much a 21st century "sundown town." If you're not familiar with the term, look it up. It is possible that some may take issue with my review because it is not exactly about the restaurant, but being in a comfortable environment is an essential part of my dining experience. I'll let you decide if it is worth the stopping.
